Thursday, May 8
Alper JCC • 5-8pm
Admission Is Free
The State of Israel and Jewish communities throughout the world will celebrate the 60th year of Israel independence!
The event will kick off officially with an appearance by Jewish children from throughout the South Dade area singing in a specially formed “South Dade Israel 60 Children’s Choir” under the direction of Cantor Rachelle Nelson of Temple Beth Am. All of the area’s rabbis and cantors will join together for a community prayer and brief ceremony highlighted by a Miami-Dade County proclamation and greetings from U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
The Alper JCC will be converted into a carnival fairway with free rides, including Bounce Houses, the “Negev” Climbing Wall, an “Israel Defense Forces” Challenge Obstacle Course, an “Eilat” Bungee Jump, “Jonah’s” Ship Ride, the gigantic “Golan Heights” Slide, the “Tel Aviv” Tubs of Fun, a Kibbutz Hay Ride and much more. Local branches of the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization (BBYO), North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) and United Synagogue Youth (USY) will provide activities for younger children. The Friends of the Israel Defense Forces will host a “Hoop-a-Thon” contest in conjunction with the Carnival Celebration in the Alper JCC’s gym. Local Jewish organizations will participate with their own tables and displays.
The Carnival Celebration also will feature the announcement of the Israel 60 Essay and Art Contest winners. Additionally, representatives of local religious and Jewish day schools will participate in an Israel 60 “Quiz Show.” Finally, Israeli and American fun food will be available for sale. Israel 60 souvenirs will also be available.
Rabbi Jeffrey Falick, Alper JCC assistant executive director and chair of the event said, “It is a fantastic experience to watch our entire community come together for this program. This is the largest celebration of Israeli independence that South Dade has hosted in many, many years. We expect it to be a fun and extremely memorable event that will be as fondly recalled as Israel’s 25th and 50th anniversary celebrations.”
The South Miami-Dade Israel 60 Carnival Celebration is sponsored by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and the member synagogues, agencies and organizations of the South Dade Jewish Leadership Council.
